If you are looking for a police procedural or anything remotely resembling the Dublin Murder Squad series, stop and put the book down bc you will be disappointed. If you set aside expectations and just fall into a read, you will discover a slow burn of a book, filled with a character driven mystery that gives you a true sense of place and displacement. The plot confronts privilege, both male and class, family ties, lies, bonds and loyalties as well as the fallout of ptsd. But be prepared that the book takes its time in developing but patience does pay off.— Audrey H.

“Reading Tana French means disappearing into another life for a while. Her stories aren’t meant to be slick or flashy, but deliberate, intricate studies of characters and their motivations. The Witch Elm is no different, as it follows the unraveling of Toby starting the night he surprises two burglars in his apartment. As you learn the secrets and weaknesses of Toby and his family, you begin to realize that while finding out what happened is enjoyable and surprising, finding out the how and the why is even better.”
