This book just broke my heart. Set in Chicago in the mid 80s and Paris during 2015, it reminds the reader about how devastating AIDS was (and still is). Like the your men who never came back from WWI, There is an entire lost generation of young men who died alone, and in fear. The stigma and loss, that was saddled on the gay community as well as its traumatized survivors as well as the everlasting effects. This story is just beautifully told and gives you a real sense of place and time.

— Audrey H.

A heart-wrenching narrative about the AIDS epidemic of the 1980's.  Makkai deftly navigates between the 20's, 80's, and present day in this beautiful novel.  Her prose is powerful, evocative, and will inspire you even as it breaks your heart.
