What are my options for shipping?
Shipping options and costs vary depending on your order and your location. The following are our current choices (in order of least expensive to most expensive). Not all options will be appear for every order:
- USPS Media Mail - A classic white truck with an eagle on it shows up at your door several days later (within 7-14 business days in most cases).
- Ground Shipping - A big brown truck, a spiffy white, orange and blue truck or a classic white truck with eagle shows up at your door a few days later (within 3 business days in most cases).
- USPS Priority Mail - A classic white truck with an eagle on it shows up at your door a few days later (within 2-3 business days in most cases).
- 2-Day Shipping - A big brown truck, a spiffy white, orange and blue truck or a classic white truck with eagle moving very quickly shows up at your door within 2 business days. (This option is only available for orders of $30 or more.)
Delivery times vary widely depending on location, time of year, the carrier and other factors beyond our control. Delivery times listed above are estimates only and are measured from the point at which the order has been processed and handed to the carrier.
The exact cost of your shipping will be calculated at checkout.
All orders will be shipped when complete. We are not able to ship partial orders.
Do you offer overnight shipping?
Alas, overnight shipping for a business our size is incredibly expensive. It would be almost cheaper for you to jump in your car and drive to the warehouse. When we're able to get a better rate, we'll try to make it available to our customers.
If I pay for 2-Day Shipping, is my order guaranteed to arrive within 2 days?
As is true for almost all on-line retailers, the shipping countdown begins once your order has been processed and handed to the shipping company. Processing usually takes 1 day, but sometimes there are delays. For example, our book distributors do not ship over the weekend. So if you order something Friday afternoon, the earliest you could receive it with 2 Day Shipping is Wednesday.
Can you ship outside the U.S.?
No. Right now, we only take orders from U.S. customers and can only ship to U.S. addresses.
Not even Canada?
Sorry, Canada. We love and respect you too much to think you'd want to pay $20.00 in shipping for a $10.00 book. But come visit us next time you're in the Boston area. We'll try to make it up to you.
Why is there a charge for each additional item?
Books weigh an average of 1 lb. for paperbacks and almost 2 lbs. for hardbacks. The shipping companies tend to notice when we add 2, 3, 4 or however many books you ordered to the box, and they charge us for it. We wish this wasn't so. But the good news is, beginning in March 2017, local customers will be able to pick up their orders right at our store. Think how much you'll save then.
Why can't I pick up my order at your store now?
The store is still missing a few key components—walls, lights, flooring, shelves, etc. If you really insisted on picking up your order there, we would have to leave it out on the sidewalk. That doesn't sound like a good idea—especially with winter coming. However, the store is scheduled to open in March of 2017. When it does, we will definitely offer in-store pickup.
What does it mean when the availability says "Usually ships within 1 to 5 days?"
That's our distributor being ultra cautious. Most orders will be processed and sent out within 1 day. Sometimes, though, a book may be in low supply, or back ordered, or there may be a slow-down due to holiday demands or Joe in Bay 5 may have taken a slightly longer than usual lunch break in order to visit his daughter's school. Even those cases are usually resolved within 2 or 3 business days. But the distributor always says 1 to 5 days, just in case.
What is the latest date I can order a book and make sure it arrives by Christmas?
Since fulfillment is being handled by our distributor, we can't guarantee any delivery date. However, most orders placed by December 19th should arrive on time. If you waited too long or are just pressed for time, please visit our favorite bookstore (other than our own), Porter Square Books.
Or, if that's not convenient, these sites can help you find an independent bookstore near you:
